The freak floods cut off villages and roads in Ceredigion, Mid-Wales, swamping holiday parks and residential streets and leaving some people trapped in upstairs rooms.

Resident Sam Ebenezer, in Talybont, told the BBC: 'The amount of water is just amazing, it's flowing from higher ground, incredible scenes, it's devastating seeing close friends' housing being soaked all the way through.

'The fire crews have done an amazing job.

Mike Barber, of Capel Bangor, told how members of the emergency  services had to break a hole in the door of his flooded cottage to let the water out.

He said: ‘We tried to stop the water coming in from the back, but the current was far too strong  and it overwhelmed us. It was  coming right through. I’m devastated.’ Christine Roberts, from Dol-y-bont, was awoken by a neighbour and  had only minutes to get out of her bungalow before being taken to  a rescue centre.

She said: ‘My home is totally flooded – everything is gone, everything is ruined. We have nothing. The only clothes we have are what we’re standing up in.’

Fire chiefs said that the tide had peaked in some areas of Wales by yesterday afternoon. RNLI flood response manager Robin Goodlad said: ‘The rescue team have plenty of experience at dropping things at a moment’s notice to go out on  rescues. 'Inspections revealed pools of standing water in key areas, including the car park.
