Alien-looking Island

H* F: Y% L$ w. _  aIt is believed that Socotra got its name from Sanskrit, meaning “Island of Bliss.” Others suggest the name was derived from Arabic and means “dripping frankincense.” It may be a bit of both, currently unspoiled by man, but most people know of Socotra as being “the most alien-looking place on Earth.” It’s like a whole another world, like a different dimension。

Socotra has been tectonically isolated from Africa and Arabia for the past 18 million years, with its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora. Huge number of flora and fauna on Socotra are endemic, i.e., they are found nowhere else on Earth: 37% of Socotra’s 825 plant species, 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species. The island was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world natural heritage site in July 2008.! `0 d" q% _# z* f

The tree can live to 5000 or 6000 years old. Its red sap was thought to be the dragon’s blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye, also inscribe as magical seals and talismans. 龍血樹號稱是地球上最長壽的樹種之一，最高齡可達6千歲，主要生長在非洲和亞洲南部等熱帶地區；其外型如同漏斗一般，可以有效接住每一滴雨水，而枝幹則像是渠道，將雨水導入樹根，因此即使在乾旱無雨的索科特拉島，它也能夠完全適應。0 U/ k0 D) A* Q7 j0 \% W
一旦劃開龍血樹的樹皮，便會有鮮紅色的汁液汩汩流出，當地人將這些「龍血」製成染料，或作為治療呼吸道及腸胃問題的藥物；也有巫師會配合儀式和煉金術，用來提升自己的法力。
