Atafu Atoll, Tokelau, Pacific Ocean1 ?8 p% h% s+ Z0 e

  e! t, G8 p  h: u  WAround 500 people live on Atafu Atoll, mostly in a village that can be seen on the corner in the left of the image above. Atafu is just five tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb8 h9 D0 U5 W" I
miles wide and is the smallest of three atolls in the Tokelau Islands, a New Zealand territory.6 q* Q- m, c/ V

Atafu is made up of coral reefs that surrounded the flanks of a volcano that has since become inactive and submerged. Like many tropical 3 P" h2 P9 R' |3 |8 z7 p* m5 `1 Z
atolls, Atafu is very low lying and vulnerable to sea-level rise. This photograph was taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station in January.
