[世界賽車比賽] Michelin, Pirelli still battling for tire contract

A Formula One Teams Association gathering of team principals onSunday morning failed to resolve the question of whether Pirelli orMichelin wins the Formula One tire contract for 2011 and beyond.
Theconsensus from those emerging from the meeting--which took place inMcLaren's motorhome--was that the contest is still finely balanced andeither party could yet get the deal.
The complication is that theoffers from the two manufacturers are not easily comparable, with bothsides offering different packages that are firm. However, the generalview is that a tire war should be avoided at all costs.
The manufacturers, who are OEM customers of both brands, also have a different take on things from the smaller teams.
"It'snot clear cut which way it will go," Mercedes GP CEO Nick Fry said."The technical and commercial packages are different. We think Pirelliand Michelin can both do the job, and to be honest we are ambivalentabout it."
Michelin has dropped its price from $6.2 million (5 million euros) perteam to $1.9 million (1.5 million euros). The Pirelli deal, meanwhile,is complicated by the fact that it includes track advertising fromwhich the teams ultimately gain a cut.
Pirelli has strengthenedits hand by being part of the F1 circus this year as supplier to GP3,which means that the company is gathering data on many of the Europeanvenues.
